Gitmo: News From the Black Hole

“History is hard to know, because of all the hired bullshit, but even without being sure of ''history'' it seems entirely reasonable to think that every now and then the energy of a whole generation comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time -- and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened.” - Hunter S. Thompson

Secret CIA Jails Hosted by Poland and Romania says Watchdog Group ( www.jonesreport.com ) - Sounds like healthy behavior for a Republic to me (note the hint of sarcasm there).

Court Rules Against Gitmo Detainees Challenging Detention in US Court System ( www.msn.com ) - So our nation will hold you without charges, and won't allow you to contest that in our court system.  How sickening!

How to Get to Gitmo... in 3 easy steps!  ( www.msn.com ) - Ok, despite the sarcasm in the title, it does seem possible for protesters to almost make it to Gitmo without being flown there directly as a "detainee."  Crazyness, who knew!

Some Gitmo Detainees Transferred then Released ( www.msn.com ) - I'm no expert here, but it sounds like someone is trying to create new terrorists rather than catch real ones.  Quite interesting.  I'd imagine I'd be a bit bitter too.

Bush Plan for Gitmo Detainee "Trials": Withhold Evidence from Accused ( www.yahoo.com ) - OK, this sounds like a fair trial to me.  Let's just not even tell these prisoners what they're being accused of exactly, what crimes they may have or may not have committed, then we'll lock them away again after we find them guilty by an appointed tribunal.  This is the FURTHEST thing from American I've ever heard of.  This is fascist in nature folks!  Nazi Germany didn't even do this to prisoners they took... they just put prisoners in camps!  How in the world is this even being considered?!?!  Let alone even proposed!  Can it really be long before these guys are trying American citizens like this... keeping charges secret for "homeland security?"  All hail dictator Bush!  Keep in mind his Supreme Court already smacked this junk down once, but he's bringing it back again!!!

Gitmo Prisoners Could be Held Indefinately ( www.infowars.com ) - Mr. Gonzalez seems to think he can do whatever he wants.  I seem to think he's gone too far pretty much anytime he opens his mouth.  Also keep in mind these people are suspects for goodness sakes... they haven't even been convicted of ANYTHING!!  This is the furthest thing from American and Freedom that I can imagine.  Too bad everyone is too busy playing Xbox, are too busy with work or want to go partying instead of caring.  O they will when the secret police, I mean Homeland Security comes banging on their doors, but not before then.  How truly sad.

Justices Say Bush Went Too Far at Gitmo ( www.msn.com ) - So the issue here isn't whether or not US law was broken... but rather an international treaty.  You see, US law doesn't matter to our President because he has declared himself the "decider" and he decides which laws he will and will not follow.  What the Supreme Court took into consideration is that the breach of international treaty is grievous enough to warrant stepping in.

Military Cancel Guantanamo Visits by Lawyers and Journalists ( www.jonesreport.com / www.washingtonpost.com ) - Well no surprise here, these people almost don't exist anymore... "...if we just keep them away from the press a little longer, everyone will forget about them!"

Gitmo Inmates on Hunger Strike ( www.msn.com ) - Well, conditions are so bad, and so many rights have been taken away that these folks, most of which are farmers and couldn't find the US on a map, have now resorted to starving themselves rather than spending more time in prison with no rights being tortured for information.  They've been there 4 years, I'd have tried this sooner I think.

Gitmo Prisoners "Reportedly" Ambush Guards  ( www.msn.com ) - Now this story changed totally in the few days since it was first posted.  Originally it said marines had stopped a prisoner from comitting suicide despite the attempts of other prisoners to keep guards away from him... now the guards were "ambushed" and it wasn't really about the suicide... that's messed up.  It also earlier said this was the 4th or 5th suicide attempt of the day.

Bush Claims He Would Close Guantanamo Prison ( www.msn.com ) - Bush claims he would like to close Gitmo and give everyone trials but says the means for doing so is still being determined by the Supreme Court.

TIME Online: Spy Chief: CIA Detainees Will Be Held Indefinitely (www.time.com) - Remember how I've explained many of these detainees are claiming to be peasant farmers from northern Afghanistan where we bombed them out of the mountains while "going after Osama."  Many also claim the CIA bought them from Pakistani and Afghan tribal leaders for briefcases of money.  Fishy that they're now perma-prisoners, no?  I'm sure there are folks that should be there, but with everything being veiled in total secrecy and no rights whatsoever being afforded to these prisoners there are bound to be abuses and those who were rounded up incorrectly.  Everyone knows the government doesn't always get it right, so what are the chances every last person at Gitmo is a definite terrorist?  I'd say slim to none.  Also note, I read a recent report saying the facility was expanding to house more prisoners!  Could they really be getting ready for "insurgents" from their upcoming war with Iran?

Gitmo, News From the Black Hole (www.commondreams.org) - Wonder why they aren't releasing anything from the "terrorist" detention center at Gitmo in Cuba?  Well maybe it has something to do with many of the prisoners explaining at their "hearing" how they were sold to America for cold hard cash.  Men who have been farmers and lowly workers who don't even know where America is on a map.  "Hey, I'll give you three thousand dollars for that farmer... I mean terrorist."

If you haven't caught the news yet, the government was forced to release the names of the prisoners which are filling the Gitmo prison camp in Cuba.  Men who claim to have no ties to any terror groups are among those held for years now with no information released and no charges filed.  This is unconstitutional and un-American and to claim otherwise is in direct opposition to the principles the founders of this nation held so dear.  One prisoner simply claimed to have a weapons stash due to a long-running feud with a cousin.  He said he had only fired a BB gun before in his life while hunting (here).  Is this really the America we want to promote as peaceful and freedom loving?  Guilty until proven innocent.  This certainly isn't the America I was told about when I was a child.
